Please pre-book on the coach

On our last few walks members numbers have been increasing, so it would now be advisable to book on and not just turn up, this will ensure we don’t turn anybody away, and be in a position to control it.                                                  Ken

message from our longest standing member Pat Cocker:

In 1978, I embarked upon a new experience: I joined what was then known as HF Rambling Club, and there began a 47 year membership of what later became, and is now known as, Central Lancs Rambling Club.

Other than the 2001 UK foot and mouth outbreak, and the more recent Covid pandemic, nothing has stopped the club from venturing out every other Sunday and taking to the tracks, hills, and mountains of the NW. How fortunate we are to have such varied and stunning landscapes within reasonable travelling distance, and how fortunate am I to have been given the opportunity to discover so many of those landscapes thanks to the willingness of others to lead our walks.

Being a member of a walking club has countless advantages. As well as the physical and mental benefits of being outdoors, and having the chance to observe the natural world and beautiful surroundings, these simple pleasures provide life long memories. The camaraderie of walking with like minded people, the safety in numbers and the relaxation over refreshments at the end of a walk, all add to the enjoyment with no pressure or obligations. Grateful thanks to all who have the navigational skills to lead, but if, like me, map reading is one of life’s great mysteries, then leave it to the experts and enjoy a carefree walk!

“Walking is the best medicine.” So said Hippocrates, the Ancient Greek physician and so say all of us. Thank you to all my fellow walkers, both past and present, in Central Lancs Walking Club, for your company on some of the most rewarding, memorable, and enjoyable days of my life, and may there be many more. ( But it won’t be another 47 years’ worth! )

Keep on walking, everyone.

Pat Cocker
